Entrenchment and institutionalization of innovation, entrepreneurship, productivity, competitiveness, creative problem solving, critical thinking skills, inclusive and sustainable growth, broad-based prosperity, health and well-being, gender equity, effective institutions, high levels of social capital, dynamic economies, as well as environmental conservation and preservation in developing countries.
Mission
Our Purpose and Modus Operandi
To make a significant contribution to the ability of developing countries to traverse from closed, state-dominated, rent-seeking, undiversified, and low value added economies beset by the brain-drain, flight of capital, un- and under-employment, environmental degradation, and negative social epidemics to building the engine for broad based prosperity, job creation, middle class development, poverty eradication, youth, female, and civil society empowerment, as well as the expansion of the private sector and the circulation of the brain drain.
We propose to promote our mission through providing extensive human capital development as well as meaningful and significant contributions to the generation of actionable recommendations on the resolution of each country’s socio-economic and environmental problems.
We are guided by the principle that the development has to be understood within each country’s own realities and context and that each nation’s developmental trajectory has to be determined by its own population, instead of being imposed unilaterally by outside forces. We believe that developmental models utilized by other countries to enhance the prosperity and welfare of their populations can serve only as useful guides. Ultimately, however, these models cannot be borrowed wholesale and implemented without the adaptations, modifications, and innovations necessary to attune them to each nation’s background and needs, enabling them to achieve the goals of development in a progressive, ever-advancing fashion.
The initiative is fully consonant with the guiding principles of the Haas School of Business. It questions the status quo, and seeks to contribute to its transformation by helping to entrench a more competitive, productive, innovative, prosperous, and inclusive order. It imbues participants in its training programs, including instructors who will subsequently educate the young, with the importance of looking beyond themselves and seeking to exert a positive impact by exuding self-confidence without an attitude while contributing to the uplift of society and promoting their enlightened self-interest by practicing servant leadership.
Specifically, we will:
- Offer internships, post-doctoral fellowships, and visiting scholar appointments focused on innovation and entrepreneurship training to promising individuals from varying backgrounds and disciplines with Masters, MBA, and PhD degrees. Our aim is to enhance entrepreneurial skills.
- Develop a curriculum and instruct leading pedagogues from developing nations on “Entrepreneurship in a Box: The Berkeley Method of Management and Entrepreneurship” so that they can teach this method, under our supervision, to students from varying disciplines and majors enrolled in tertiary education in their respective country’s public and private colleges and universities. Depending upon our level of success, we may also eventually extend the training to high school students, create a curriculum for high schoolers, and instruct top performing high school teachers on the Berkeley method.
- Offer post-doctoral fellowships and visiting scholar appointments to leading researchers from developing countries to work with subject matter experts at UC Berkeley to produce policy relevant white papers providing rigorous analyses of the underlying causes and offering effective/innovative (preferably market oriented) solutions for resolving the most pressing socio-economic and environmental problems facing each developing nation.
